With much anticipation surrounding new credit scoring algorithms in the US, experts agree that most consumers will see a hike in their scores across the three bureaus; Experian, TransUnion and Equifax.  The 202-page bill, the Comprehensive Consumer Credit Reporting Reform Act, (H.R. 5282) was passed in an effort to more accurately measure credit risk, the new models will focus on trended data and repayment history, while culling the less reliable information. Much of today’s errand reporting results from public records that can be less accurate and difficult to link to individual consumers.

By eliminating this public records data, civil judgments such as tax liens for example, will also be removed from consumer credit files.

In addition, medical collections will no longer burden the new reporting models. With countless consumers confused by the insurance billing process and which party is responsible for what portion of the payment, collections will not be reported until they’ve reached a much more mature period. A recent report by the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau outlined many insufficient quality control systems and a number of problems with how the bureaus are currently reporting those important 3-digit credit scores.

What does this mean for you?

Some experts believe it could boost individual credit scores by as much as 40 points or more. Credit history and scoring is among the most important qualifying component when seeking approval for home mortgage financing. Your credit score dictates everything from the amount of money you can borrow, to your interest rate and repayment terms. In many cases, a 40 point swing in credit score will mean the difference in whether the applicant is approved or denied home loan eligibility.

We’ve been lucky the past decade, but Mother Nature may spin a few storms our way this season.

As always, we’ll hope for the best and prepare for the worst. So, when there’s even a mention of a storm, put on your work clothes and get to work immediately.

Before a hurricane hits land, make sure you have the items on this list checked off and completed:

Your Home:

  • Examine rain gutters
  • Prepare and test generator
  • Prepare lanterns and flashlights
  • Bring any projectiles inside
  • Trim branches and remove dead trees
  • Reinforce windows and doors (including garage doors)

Your Health:

  • Organize vital medication
  • Purchase non-perishable food
  • Prepare at least 3 gallons of water per person (24 bottles per person)
  • Freeze plenty of water bottles and have a cooler ready

Generator: Buy fresh gasoline and test prior to the storm. Remember to NEVER try to power a house by plugging a generator into a wall outlet.

Safe room: Consider building or devising a FEMA safe room ICC 500 storm shelter designed for protection from high winds and flooding.

Rain gutters: Clean and secure rain gutters to prevent external damage from loose pipes and clear any clogs to prevent water damage.

Outdoor Furniture: Bring it all inside or store in the garage immediately. Do not wait for winds to pick up, by that point, it could be too late and highly dangerous.

Cooler: In case of a power outage this cooler can store perishables from your refrigerator and freezer. Use frozen water bottles instead of ice, as they thaw they can be used as drinking water.

Medication: Refill prescriptions immediately and have basic first aid on-hand.

Food: Non-perishables – can goods, can soups, crackers, granola/protein bars, fruit (apples, oranges and bananas), preserved meat (jerky), nuts/trail mix, peanut butter, bread, canned/powdered milk, individual packets of mayo/mustard for tuna/chicken salad and sandwiches. Don’t forget salt and pepper! And, dare we say, a little red wine.

The term “legacy” comes up often in my social circle. What can I, or my family, do to leave a lasting legacy donation that will benefit my community – forever?

I am a current board member of the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA. The children of our community, are the future. I think there is a large part of our community that don’t realize there are thousands of kids and families that have need for financial help.

How did I leave my legacy?

My most recent and largest to date community donation is a $500,000 endowment to the Dr. P. Phillips YMCA.

A brand new 3,000 square foot child development center (part of the $10,000,000 expansion going on now) will be named the Paul McGarigal Family Child Development Center upon completion in next few months.

How did I do it?

I funded this donation through an irrevocable trust and purchase a $500,000 life insurance policy that will go directly to the YMCA upon my death. This will fund about a 5% return each year – $25,000 – which will be needed to continue serving all the kids that go through my Paul McGarigal Family Child Development Center – forever.

Since I started this foundation donation at the DP YMCA, we’ve had a combined $2,300,000 of additional legacy gifts from some of the most generous and thoughtful people in our community!
